History
On 30 January 2014, the Government of India finalized the country’s first passenger vehicle fuel-efficiency standards. The standard was scheduled to take effect in the beginning of April 2016, and set the efficiency targets for new cars at the equivalent of 130 gCO2/km in 2016 and 113 gCO2/km in 2021. On 23 April 2015, the government issued another notification postponing the implementation of standards by a year. The standards will now take effect on April 2017 and April 2022 instead of 2016 and 2021, respectively. The notification includes petrol equivalent conversion factor for electric vehicles and also specifies changes to the diesel, CNG and LPG conversion factors defined in the first notification. The standards will keep roughly 50 million tons of CO2 out of the atmosphere in 2030 alone. The fuel efficiency standard will be based on the average weight of the fleet that manufacturers sell in a given year.
