European Union
Initiated in 1993, the “Euro” emissions standards have been tightened progressively over time. Standards for light-duty vehicles are denoted with Arabic numerals (e.g. Euro 6), whereas heavy-duty vehicle standards are denoted using Roman numerals (e.g. Euro VI). The current Euro VI standards for heavy-duty vehicles are among the best in the world. The compliance and enforcement procedures of Euro 6 standards for light-duty vehicles are being further developed under the Real-Driving Emissions program. The EU has promoted low-carbon fuels through its Renewable Energy Directive (RED) and Fuel Quality Directive (FQD). Standards are enforceable throughout all EU member states. Many other nations have modeled their own standards after the EU pathway.
